Wildlife Garden with Natural Swimming Pond, Bristol

This garden was designed for a family with teenagers, who wished to create a wild life friendly garden that would provide year-round interest and support a diverse range of species. The wish list included a natural swimming pond, to attract birds, pollinating insects, amphibians and aquatic invertebrates, alongside a variety of complementary habitats including a wildflower meadow and deep herbaceous borders.

They wanted a terrace for outdoor dining and entertaining, with seating for six to eight people, as well as a smaller, more intimate seating area close to the water and a shaded structure for relaxation. Planting was to focus on seasonal interest, particularly in spring and autumn, while incorporating native species to enhance biodiversity. Practical requirements included a compost area, log store and space for waste and recycling, creating a garden that successfully combines habitat creation, ornamental planting and outdoor living.
